Lion

Sighted on: 21.August.2025

Lioness protecting a cub from an unknown male

This week we had a truly remarkable encounter that perfectly captured the raw power and social dynamics of lions.

A pride of lions had successfully hunted and killed a large eland within the territory of a dominant male. While the pride was still feeding, the male returned with a lioness. Upon their arrival, they quickly chased the pride away and claimed the carcass for themselves.

The male and lioness then fed on what remained—about half of the eland—turning another pride’s hard-earned kill into an effortless meal for themselves.

This sighting highlighted the crucial role that dominance and hierarchy play in lion society. It was a powerful reminder that survival in the Kalahari is not only about hunting, but also about strength, authority, and timing.
