Giraffe

Sighted on: 27.August.2025

Lioness protecting a cub from an unknown male

This morning’s game drive treated us to the graceful sight of a giraffe feeding on an apple-leaf tree. With effortless elegance, it stretched high into the branches, using its remarkable 45 cm prehensile tongue to pluck leaves, even from thorny twigs.

Giraffes spend much of their day browsing, their great height allowing them to reach food far beyond the grasp of other herbivores. In the dry Kalahari season, hardy trees like apple-leaf and acacias provide vital nourishment, holding onto their leaves and pods when most vegetation withers. By drawing enough moisture from these leaves, giraffes can go for long periods without drinking — a wonderful glimpse into how perfectly they are adapted to life in this arid wilderness.
