December heralds the start of the green season in the Central Kalahari; the arrival of the rains results in the growth of new grass, turning the desert green. This season of abundance is also known as the ‘baby season’ as herbivores give birth to their young in the comforting environment created by fresh grass and topped-up watering holes. However, sometimes the synchronization is not entirely on point, and during the game drive today, we saw an impala calf that was born the transformation of the landscape. The desert sand is still hot, and water is scarce – the unfortunate fawn was seen sprinting towards a waterhole to quench its thirst.
