Black - winged stilts

This week, we were treated to a wonderful sighting of Black-winged Stilts feeding in one of our Kalahari pans. These elegant waders, with their slender red legs and striking black-and-white plumage, are always a delight to observe.
These waterbirds visit the Kalahari — a region better known for its arid landscapes — because of its seasonal pans. After good rains, temporary wetlands form across the desert, creating ideal feeding grounds for birds such as stilts. The shallow water draws insects, small crustaceans, and other tiny aquatic creatures — exactly the food these birds rely on.
Black-winged Stilts move across Botswana in search of water. When the pans fill, the Kalahari becomes a valuable stopover where they can feed, rest, and occasionally even breed. This is why the Green Season is especially productive and full of surprises.
Watching them stand calmly on one leg in the water is classic stilt behaviour, helping them conserve body heat while they rest.
