The Green Season in the Kalahari plays a vital role in shaping the behaviour of the oryx. Following rainfall, the desert responds quickly, producing nutrient-rich vegetation that allows oryx to feed efficiently and maintain excellent body condition. Because much of this vegetation contains sufficient moisture, oryx are able to meet their water requirements without relying on permanent water sources.

As a result, oryx become more widely distributed across the reserve rather than concentrated around waterholes. This reduces competition with other herbivores and lowers the risk of predator encounters. Improved nutrition during the Green Season also supports breeding and calf development, making this an important period for population stability.

The presence of an oryx in such lush surroundings is a strong indicator of a healthy Green Season, where rainfall, vegetation growth, and wildlife movement come together to reveal the true productivity of the Kalahari.
