During game drives, insects often go unnoticed, despite being incredibly fascinating creatures, with an estimated 5.5 million species, of which only one million have been described and named. This week, we decided to shine a light on these overlooked animals, and during our safari, we were fortunate to encounter a praying mantis. This extraordinary insect possesses remarkable traits, such as its mastery of camouflage—blending seamlessly with surroundings like leaves, flowers, or sticks to evade predators and ambush prey. Unlike most insects, mantises can rotate their heads, providing exceptional situational awareness and precision in hunting. Beyond their predatory prowess, they play a vital ecological role as natural pest controllers. These unique characteristics make mantises a captivating and essential part of the insect world, deserving of greater appreciation.
