January 2025 - Week 4 Roundup

Scaly-feathered weaver

Sighted on: 27.Jan.2025

Lioness protecting a cub from an unknown male

On our morning drive, we observed the fascinating breeding behaviour of the scaly-feathered weaver. These small birds were busily building their grass nests in the middle of acacia trees. The nests were securely tucked within the branches, protecting them from predators such as snakes and birds of prey. Watching them collect grass and construct their nests was truly captivating and demonstrated their impressive skills.

Once the eggs are laid, both parents take turns keeping them warm and safe. After the eggs hatch, the chicks emerge helpless, without feathers and with their eyes closed. The parents feed and care for them until they grow stronger. As the chicks grow bigger, the parents continue looking after them until they are fully grown and able to fend for themselves.
