Lions & Bat-eared fox interaction
Sighted on: 01.January.2026

On the morning of 1 January, we heard a lion roaring from the direction of the airstrip. Drawn by the sound, we decided to investigate. Upon arrival, we were met with an unforgettable scene: a group of 14 bat-eared foxes running together towards the northern side, their large ears upright and their movements quick and coordinated.
Bat-eared foxes are commonly found around Maun and across the Kalahari, where they favour open grasslands and lightly wooded areas with sandy soils rich in termites, their primary food source. Their oversized ears play a vital role in survival, helping them detect both predators and the faint underground movements of insects.
As the foxes moved across the airstrip, two lionesses suddenly appeared and gave chase, turning the calm morning into a moment of intense drama. Fortunately, the foxes relied on their speed, sharp awareness, and group vigilance, and not a single one was caught. It was a remarkable display of how smaller predators have adapted to compete and survive in the challenging Kalahari environment.
