Giant Spotted Eagle Owl

Sighted on: 12.January.2026

Lioness protecting a cub from an unknown male

As the Kalahari shifted from the dry season into the first breaths of rain, conditions briefly favoured many of its owls. With the vegetation yet to thicken, prey remained exposed and vulnerable, allowing these nocturnal hunters to hunt with greater success. The result was a season of abundance, marked by increased breeding activity and the presence of newly fledged young.

We were fortunate to witness one such moment at close quarters — a juvenile Giant Spotted Eagle-Owl, motionless and fully exposed, holding its ground before our lens. The encounter was unguarded and intensely intimate, leaving our guests quietly mesmerised by a sight rarely experienced so openly in the wild.
