Steenbok

Sighted on: 08.July.2024

Lioness protecting a cub from an unknown male

We chanced upon a Steenbok during the game drive this morning. Steenboks are small antelopes that thrive in the Kalahari Desert by being clever and adaptable. They mostly live alone, except during the mating season. These herbivores eat leaves, shoots, and fruits, getting all their water from their food, so they don't need to drink much. When they feel threatened, they hide by lying flat in tall grass or running in a zigzag manner. They prefer areas with lots of cover, like bushes, which helps them stay safe from predators. This intelligent behaviour and diet help them survive well in the dry, harsh conditions of the Kalahari.
