We were lucky to bump into a herd of giraffes with young during the game drive this evening. Giraffe calves are born already standing tall at about 6 feet and weighing up to 100kg after a 14–16-month gestation. They're quick learners, beginning to explore their environment within hours, although they continue nursing for up to 18 months. Their unique coat patterns help them blend into the savanna, where they learn essential life skills from their mothers and the herd, such as identifying safe feeding areas and recognizing potential threats. Despite their size, giraffe calves are vulnerable to predators like lions and hyenas, highlighting the importance of staying close to their herd and learning protective behaviours for safety. These young giraffes are also known for their playful behaviour, often running and frolicking as they explore their environment and develop coordination.
