Garden Orb Spider
Sighted on: 04.March.2025

During our game drive this morning, we spotted a Garden Orb Spider. These large spiders are commonly found in gardens and the Kalahari wilderness. The males are much smaller than the females. The spider’s round abdomen has small bumps, giving it a knobbly appearance, and its legs have distinctive bands.
Garden orb spiders spin long webs between plants, either in gardens or among bushes. Their webs are usually close to the ground, and they sit in the centre, facing downwards.
These spiders play an important role in nature. By keeping insect numbers in check, they help maintain a balanced ecosystem. They also serve as food for birds like shrikes, drongos, and robins, as well as reptiles like geckos and small skinks.
In the Kalahari, where insect populations change with the seasons, our guests had the chance to witness this stunning species up close—a truly special sighting..
