This week’s highlight from the Kalahari comes from the desert floor, where recent rains have brought increased activity from Tok-tokkie beetles. These small desert engineers are named after the distinctive “tok-tok” tapping sound they make on the sand, a vibration used to communicate while searching for a mate. The rains have also brought fresh plant material and renewed life to the desert floor, providing the food and moisture that allow these hardy beetles to thrive.
