Tannin, Heat & Wilting
Sighted on: 22.November.2023
During the game drive, we noticed certain interesting aspects of the Kalahari landscape – hedging, tannin, heat and wilting in plants. Tannin is a vital plant substance and a critical defensive chemical that discourages herbivorous from feeding on it. However, there is a downside: the high concentration of tannin, along with the excessive heat of the Kalahari, results in a higher rate of evapotranspiration, which leads to a higher rate of wilting. Hedging is a healing mechanism by which fresh shoots emerge around a wound (as a result of grazing), providing new growth and protection to the affected part of the plant.
