The highlight of the week was the reappearance of one of the lion prides that frequent our game reserve. The pride, usually resident in the western territory, had been absent for the past month, roaming instead through the vast Central Kalahari Game Reserve to exploit fresh hunting grounds while avoiding conflict with the dominant male.

The six lionesses, accompanied by four growing sub-adult males, are now navigating expansive plains dotted with camelthorn trees, taking advantage of the recent rains that have concentrated springbok and oryx herds. The pride exhibits coordinated hunting tactics and disciplined movement, with the lionesses guiding the young males as they develop endurance and nomadic skills.

Their mobility highlights the adaptability of lions in a large, interconnected landscape, demonstrating how the Kalahari’s vastness provides both refuge and opportunity for survival.
