The highlight of the week was the ground squirrel. The ground squirrel is a desert specialist native to the Kalahari, easily identified by its bushy tail. These squirrels use their tails like umbrellas, providing shade while they forage under the hot sun, helping them stay cool in the open plains. They can go long stretches without water, getting moisture from roots, tubers, and plants, which helps them survive in the arid environment.

Ground squirrels live in groups and share complex burrows that protect them from predators and extreme weather, providing a safe place to rest. They take turns standing guard, watching for threats like birds of prey or jackals. Occasionally, they dust-bathe to keep clean and reduce parasites. Their teamwork and adaptability make them true desert survivors.
