Ground Agama

A ground agama hogged the limelight this week. The ground agama, also known as the rock agama (Agama aculeata), is usually a terrestrial lizard, but it has some funny quirks when it comes to perching and sunbathing. Here are a few interesting and amusing facts that guests were so interested in. Did you know that while they are called ground agamas, you can occasionally find them in trees? It seems they’ve forgotten their own name and decided to get a better view! Secondly, when perched in the sun, they look like they’re trying out different yoga poses—lifting their heads, puffing up their bodies, and doing push-ups to show off to rivals and potential mates. What a workout! And finally, their earthy colours allow them to blend in with the tree bark, giving them the confidence to think they are invisible—until they suddenly dart after prey or display their vibrant, puffed-up heads.
