October 2024 - Week 5 Roundup

Spotted thick-knee

Sighted on: 28.October.2024

Lioness protecting a cub from an unknown male

During this morning's game drive, we encountered the ubiquitous spotted thick-knee. These ground-dwelling birds lay their eggs directly on the ground, where they blend into their surroundings. Their chicks are precocial, meaning they are active and mobile shortly after hatching.

To protect their young from predators such as rock monitor lizards, jackals, and wild cats, adult spotted thick-knees use a clever defence strategy. They flash their white under-tail feathers to distract and divert predators’ attention away from their chicks. This behaviour draws the predator’s focus to the adult, increasing the young birds' chances of survival.
