This week, we were treated to a truly special sighting — a pair of ostriches walking gracefully along one of our sandy tracks, surrounded by a lively group of tiny chicks.
In the open Kalahari landscape, this family represents teamwork and devotion at its finest. The male and female share every part of the parenting journey, from guarding their eggs during the long 40-day incubation period to protecting their newly hatched chicks from predators and the harsh elements. The female blends beautifully with the sand during the day, while the male takes over at night, his dark feathers concealing the nest in the moonlight.
Now, with their chicks hatched and full of life, both parents lead their young through the grasslands with the male guiding confidently ahead and the female watching closely from behind. At night, the father lowers himself to the ground so the chicks can nestle safely beneath his wings, while by day, they learn to feed, walk, and survive under his careful watch.
It was a beautiful and heartwarming moment and a reminder of how life in the Kalahari thrives through care, cooperation, and quiet strength.
