Out on the sand tracks of Gham Dhao Private Game Reserve, every field drive continues to reveal the intricate dynamics, resilience, and daily realities of life in the Central Kalahari, highlighted most recently by the return of a pride we haven’t seen in our reserve for a few months, which now frequents our western sector while another dominant pride firmly holds the center.

We have been monitoring our local sub-adult male lions as they grow, fill out their manes, and navigate their shifting roles within these complex territorial boundaries, observing these apex predators up close from calm resting behavior to powerful morning yawns that highlight the patience required to witness natural wildlife moments.

A recent sighting of a zebra bearing fresh claw marks along its flank served as a striking reminder of the daily pressures of survival in the Kalahari, where a red-billed oxpecker was already at work on its back to showcase the fine line between mutualism and opportunistic feeding around open wounds.

We also encountered a bachelor herd of impala rams bounding across the open sandveld. These adaptable mixed feeders rely on their legendary athletic capability leaping up to 3 meters high and covering over 10 meters in a single bound as an effective anti-predator strategy to confuse pursuers.
