African Rock Python
Sighted on: 09.September.2025

The highlight of the week was an exceptional encounter— an African Rock Python was observed coiled within the branches of a Purple Pod Terminalia tree. Such a sight is both rare and remarkable, offering valuable insight into the behaviour of this species.
The coiled posture plays several important roles. It provides effective camouflage and protection, as the snake blends seamlessly with the bark and foliage. It also assists in thermoregulation, allowing the python to balance its exposure between sunlight and shade. Additionally, this position can serve as an ambush strategy, enabling the snake to remain undetected while monitoring for potential prey below.
Encounters of this nature highlight not only the adaptability of wildlife in the Kalahari but also the intricate ways in which species interact with their environment. This sighting serves as a reminder of the hidden wonders that continue to define the uniqueness of this landscape.
