Survival of the fittest plays out daily in the Kalahari. As the seasons shift and temperatures soar, small birds such as the delicate Violet-eared Waxbill face dehydration and heat stress.

This afternoon, we witnessed a Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill seize one — its powerful bill splitting the head to access the rich brain nutrients, an energy boost perfectly suited to this harsh land.

Our guests were captivated by the raw reality of nature, with a touch of humour: “If your brain is small, you’ll be taken! How many waxbills do you think a hornbill needs each week?”

The Kalahari never ceases to amaze — both brutal and beautiful.
