Marsh Owl

Sighted on: 25.September.2025

Lioness protecting a cub from an unknown male

As the evening grew darker and we began making our way back from sundowners at the water pan, we came across a pair of Marsh Owls right on the road. One lifted silently into the night sky, while the other remained still, fixing us with its glowing golden eyes. What made this encounter so special is that Marsh Owls are not birds we usually see in the Kalahari.

This year’s rains changed everything. The grasses grew thick across the pans and, with them, came an explosion of rodents – the perfect hunting ground for these owls. They followed the food and found a new home here, showing us how even the driest desert can become a welcoming place after good rains.

Moments like this remind us how alive and adaptable the Kalahari truly is. The rain doesn’t just bring green landscapes; it brings life, movement, and unexpected visitors we never imagined we would see.
