Mourning Dove

Sighted on: 04.December.2024

We had a group of passionate birders this week, and we had a rather interesting encounter during the game drive today: an egg of a mourning dove that had failed to hatch. The reasons for this can vary and may include infertility, environmental conditions such as weather, chemical use, or physical damage to the eggshell.

A mourning dove lays one egg at a time but can raise multiple broods during its nesting season, which usually takes place from early spring to late summer. They typically have two but sometimes as many as five. Mourning doves are known to reuse nests from previous seasons or build on top of old nests to start new broods quickly.
